PICC (Peripherally Inserted Central Catheter) is a thin, long tube inserted through a peripheral vein in the arm, which then passes through to the central vein near the heart. This catheter serves several purposes:

Purpose

  • Difficult Peripheral Vascular Access: Used when a patient’s peripheral veins are weak or challenging to access.
  • Administering High-Concentration TPN Solutions: Allows infusion of highly concentrated medications directly into the central circulation, minimizing peripheral vein irritation.
  • Chemotherapy Administration: Delivers cytotoxic drugs directly to the superior vena cava, reducing peripheral vein sclerosis, inflammation, and pain.
  • Long-Term Intravenous Fluid Therapy: Can be used for a minimum of two weeks up to one month or longer.

Features

  • Long-Term Use: Once inserted, a PICC can be used for an extended period, eliminating the need for frequent venipuncture.
  • No Frequent IV Line Changes: IV lines do not need to be secured every 4 days.

Usage Precautions

  • Avoid Kinking: Handle the PICC carefully to prevent kinking.
  • Regular Dressing Changes and Maintenance: Proper management requires regular dressing changes and maintaining openness.

Stability Assurance

  • During PICC insertion, the device ensures that the catheter remains securely in place.
  • It provides stability even during patient movement or activity, preventing catheter displacement.

User Convenience

  • Designed for the convenience of both patients and nurses.
  • The fixation device allows easy catheter stabilization and manipulation.

Precautions

  • Performed by Trained Medical Professionals : Only trained healthcare personnel should insert the catheter and use the fixation device.
  • Avoid Excessive Tightening : Be cautious not to apply excessive force when securing the device.
